Length of Position: 11-12 months

Description: WorldTeach has been invited by several types of schools and institutions throughout Ecuador to provide English language training. Although teaching placements vary widely by city and host institution, a majority of WorldTeach volunteers in Ecuador teach English in university or community classes with adult students. Most volunteers live and teach in cities and large towns since English is not yet taught widely in the countryside.

Volunteers are usually responsible for teaching 20-25 hours a week, in addition to allotting time for planning lessons, holding regular office hours, and developing new language instruction materials. Volunteers may also coordinate activities outside of the classroom, such as setting up and running an English club for students or teachers. Class size varies widely throughout the placements, as do the type of students and their level of English. Volunteers may teach university students, faculty and staff and/or open-enrollment classes for members of the local community. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, volunteers are also encouraged to actively participate in community life and activities or projects of interest.

The reality is that the countries that most need educators cannot afford to cover all of the costs associated with training, travel, insurance, and other expenses related to placing a teacher overseas. Because WorldTeach receives no income from government grants or an endowment, we ask each volunteer to contribute or fund raise the cost of their placement and training in these countries, while the host community provides housing and a small stipend to support you during your service. By requesting that volunteers help fund their service overseas, WorldTeach is able to provide volunteer educators to countries that would not otherwise be able to afford qualified teachers. All WorldTeach volunteers are provided with a fundraising guide and access to alumni with fund raising experience to help them raise money to meet these costs. Over 70% of WorldTeach volunteers end up fundraising some portion of their program cost. Program Cost includes: pre-departure information and preparation, round-trip international airfare, health insurance, in-country orientation, transportation to your site, meals and housing during orientation and throughout your teaching service, 24-hour field support, and after-service support and networking.
