Description:
The schools in Ecuador are open from 7:30 till 12:30. You will teach English in different classes, maybe in different schools. The numbers of pupils in a class vary from 5 to 50 and the ages from 5 to 15 years old.
The parents may also ask you to teach them English. Depending on the people you will meet, on your motivations, you may also teach English during the afternoon to the parents.
If you arrive in Guamote in July or August, workshops could be organized to teach English to children and parents, because these are months of vacation in Ecuador, and there is no school.
Highlights:
Guamote is the name of a canton in the Chimborazo province, but above all the name of the small town, capital of the canton with 2000 inhabitants. The canton is divided in 3 parishes (Palmira, Cebadas and La Matriz) and 152 indigenous communities. Guamote is situated at 3,050 meters above the see level. The average annual temperature is 13 degrees Celsius. In total there were 34,000 inhabitants in 2001 with 33,000 indigenous people and 1,000 "mestizos". The people are mostly living in the countryside. And except in Guamote city, it can be considered that people are living in rural zones. Nevertheless, all the people from the canton are coming every Thursday to the Guamote market (la feria).

* The volunteer only has to cover his own costs for travel, vaccines, insurance, VISA etc.
Qualifications / Skills Needed:
We want people that can stay more than 2 months, the necessary time to get to know the children, to acclimatize, (if you want to stay one year or more, it may be possible that you get paid, more or less 500 USD a month, which would allow you to live well, it should be discussed with the school directors). Without any doubt, the directors prefer that you stay for one school year. The coming school year starts the 4th of September.
It is not compulsory that you speak Spanish, but it will be easier for your integration in Guamote if you have some basics. But as long as you speak English; you like talking to children; and you are patient, it will be fine. You will also have the chance to go on some months to South America, enjoy a new culture and new experiences.

Teach English, Volunteer!'s Mission Statement: 'Teach english, Volunteer!' is looking for people that would like to teach english in Guamote, a small village of Ecuador, in the Andes.
You would teach in some scholls of the canton, mostly to indigenous people.
We are doing our best to welcome the volunteers... You should be hosted by a nice family...
